I grew up as a teenager in the 90s who went to church youth group all the time.  During this time there was the rise of purity culture which we are all learning was an attempt to control teen sexuality and particularly teen female sexuality. I don’t think the boys ever got a talk about what they wore and how it might be tempting to the girls. Another mark of growing up in youth group in the 90s was a deep emphasis on the idea that Jesus should be all any of us needs. I remember choruses like Jesus, Lover of my Soul, and You’re All that I want.

When I read this passage I get a different picture. In our text today, God looks at Adam and sees that he is lonely. God does not try to be the one that provides relief to Adam loneliness. Rather, God gives Adam another human. Someone who can fill the whole that not even God presumes to be able to fill well. I am not trying to say that God can’t fill Adam’s loneliness. But God chose to not do this. Perhaps God created us in a way that required us to need each other so that we would perpetually be aware of our need.
