Introduction

This week we are looking together at Psalm 146. The Psalter is a collection of 150 prayers, hymns, and meditations written and used by the Israelites. It is a collection that contains joyful praise, painful lament, and every human emotion between the two. Because it covers the wide scope of human experience, the hymns remain relevant to us even today.

Scripture: Psalm 146

Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord, O my soul!
I will praise the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God all my life long.
Do not put your trust in princes, in mortals, in whom there is no help.
When their breath departs, they return to the earth; on that very day their plans perish.

Many scholars see some intentional organization to the ways the Psalter is knit together. From beginning to end, the book follows the arch of the narrative of the relationship between God and the Israelites. The collection of hymns are split into five groups and called Book I, Book II, so on and so forth. Psalms 138-145 are the final collection of hymns attributed to David. And they are followed by the final five hymns which are all praise hymns. These five hymns are praise hymns that invite an ever-expanding circle of participants until it gets to the final hymn and finally, “everything that has breath” is invited into the praise. We do not all engage in God in the same ways and we do not always understand or agree with the beliefs of others. However, all are included in the praise of God and we can stand together knowing that God is at work in the world through such a variety of people that our hearts cannot contain it.
