What’s in a Name?

Hosea 1:1-1-10
In recent days we’ve seen shootings of persons by police and then shootings of police officers (while, tragically, protecting protestors). How might we come together and recognize our common humanity and kinship in Christ? Perhaps unexpectantly, the story of the prophet Hosea and his adulterous spouse Gomer offers an answer, for in chapter 1, we are reminded that we are all “children of the living God.”

I am a member of Ralph’s class and try to follow your podcast each week. Tonight as I listened, I kept thinking that what you all said was certainly true and very consistent with Amos’ preaching. But I didn’t hear any emphasis, any mention really, of the worship, the false worship that the people were constantly going after. And I think that was the point of Hosea’s marriage. Their worship was adultery, a lack of faith in God and failure to trust him. And if I read the prophets’ honestly these days, I am afraid this is also the situation in our own society. I am constantly being challenged to ask myself how faithful I am to my vows to worship only God. I feel sure you will agree with these thoughts and possibly can pick up on them next week. Thanks for all of the inspiration and challenge you give us….in Jeus’s name. 🙂 Marj Bennett
Marj, greetings from a fellow North Carolinian! Thanks for listening and taking the time to comment. I think your ideas about the idolatry of false worship being a key theme in Amos are right. If I remember correctly (I haven’t gone back to listen to the whole episode), we did discuss the false “gods” we chase after—money, fame, sex—and often worship them instead of God, but I don’t think we talked about it quite to the extent you indicate here. A good point indeed. Thanks for your comment and faithfulness in studying Scripture with us.
