Play the “United” video clip. (if you are familiar with the Green Arrow DC comic book plot lines or the TV show on the CW Network, you may wish to expand on the following questions) and ask:
- Without starting an argument here, what types of things happen in local governments that might make someone feel that their community has entered a time of darkness?
- How do local communities address such times to move through them?
- After announcing his candidacy for mayor, Oliver Queen experienced many bad things, so why does he have hope for anything good to happen in his time of darkness?
- Where does he see the light shining through?
- Why do you think “local government gone bad” is such a popular theme for superhero stories?
