The Power the Empire Never Sees

Scripture has a habit of telling its stories from the wrong end of the throne room. Exodus 1:8–2:10 is a masterclass in the move. A new king arises over Egypt, commanding armies, quarries, and the machinery of genocide — and the narrator refuses to record his name. Meanwhile two midwives, women near the bottom of every social ladder the ancient world had, are named forever: Shiphrah and Puah. In a culture where kings carved their names into stone to secure immortality, the text quietly hands immortality to the women Pharaoh never thought to fear. His great miscalculation was assuming power looked like him. It looked instead like a midwife’s steady hands, a mother waterproofing a basket, a sister keeping watch in the reeds, a princess choosing mercy over decree.
