Introduction

Our text today, Mark 1:21-28, is often referred to as the exorcism at Capernaum and follows the story of Jesus calling his disciples. While this is a helpful way to identify the story, it can mislead us about the purpose of the text. Mark’s primary purpose in this story was not to show Jesus’ miraculous powers, but rather to declare his authority as a teacher of scripture.

Scripture: Mark 1:21-28

Just then there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit, and he cried out, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God.” But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying with a loud voice, came out of him.

Session Pages

Update: Due to the effects of the COVID-19 Coronavirus, most Bible study groups are finding themselves meeting virtually, if at all. In an effort to be responsive to your emerging needs in these times, we are changing our format to make it more accessible for home use. Faithelement is adding a new “Connect” session page, and combining youth and media during this time. “Connect” is designed to work with virtual forms of keeping connected with your group. The youth page also now does not assume a group activity time. We plan to return to our usual session page set when groups are again able to meet in person. Please advise us on how we might better serve your needs in these trying times.
