Introduction

This week, we begin a new year in the life of the church calendar with the first Sunday of Advent. Our text is Isaiah 2:1-5. In this text, the prophet Isaiah paints a picture for us of a world that seems, in many ways, too good to be true. The opening chapters of the book of Isaiah are mostly filled with words of God’s judgment, but along the way, there are words like these found in our passage that bring hope and remind Isaiah’s audience that God’s judgment will never be the last thing.

Scripture: Isaiah 2:1-5

The word that Isaiah son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. In days to come the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be raised above the hills; all the nations shall stream to it. Many peoples shall come and say, “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths.”
